Contrapunctus - Mavis Chan Solo Exhibition

Liu Yichang once said, those vanished moments passed as if it is detached by a dusty glass that can be seen but not caught. Travelled through these connected moments, none of us can go back to the past. This dusty glass has become a reflection and introspection of moments. Time is always like this. Gone. Not gone. But it’s gone. Can be seen but not caught. I see Interlude dissolving through the membrane of this dusty glass and transforming into Contrapunctus.

Contrapunctus is another lifetime of Interlude. The true of life - sometimes it is just like the vagueness of haze that keeps you from the reality right in front. We can only see life from this once-real reflection after the time slipped away. We also see the real from the reflection. Painting paper is just like an interface, inspires those reflections from water into the real surface, let them become entity. An entity with soul. If Interlude is the story about exploration of inner-existence between moments, Contrapunctus is the reflection of story that explores inner-existence between moments.

Interlude - A Solo Exhibition of Mavis Chan

If moments is what draw our attention, the Artist wants Interlude to explore the inner-existence between moments.

Retaining the spirit of “Living and Art as one” and “Evolving but stay true to Classical Chinese core”, the Interlude builds upon the foundation of the Inkling of the Heart.  The Interlude is a quest to explore a new paradigm, celebrating the essence of elegance, subtlety and yin-yang of the traditional aesthetics in Chinese painting. The Artist draws inspiration from colors and subject compositions of ukiyo-e style and contemporary illustration techniques, breaking away from the accustomed theme of heavily landscape and nature focus of classical Chinese art. These collections of small pieces capture the culture, living and religion of the contemporary society. Through these works, the possibilities of the contemporary Chinese art are reintroduced. Meanwhile, the Artist hopes to present the audiences who accustomed to common notions of Chinese painting traditions with a fresh and new interpretation through the small piece style of the artistic creation.

Inkling of the heart 墨縈心跡

Local artist, Mavis Chan, explores a new paradigm of Chinese painting in her solo exhibition. The exhibits present an innovative style of modern Chinese painting – itdraws inspiration from contemporary living, as well as western artistic elements into traditional Chinese painting. The subjects of the exhibits would be a surprise to those accustomed to traditional Chinese paintings – an example being the depiction of rapid growth of modern technology. Through these works, the artist aims to challenge common notions of Chinese paintings traditions.
